WiDS Ambassador Event Highlights: September & October

WiDS Tbilisi
WiDS Guanajuato

WiDS Guanajuato, held at CIMAT, returned to an in-person format for 2024 with 28 in-person participants and three online attendees. Supported by SMM and CIMAT, the event featured five talks by notable women applying Data Science and AI across various fields. Highlights included a workshop on microbiome analysis and a roundtable addressing the challenges of increasing women’s participation in Data Science, as well as the need for greater diversity to combat unconscious biases. Talks from the event will be made available on the “Mexicanas en Ciencia de Datos” Facebook page, providing broader visibility to the important work shared.

WiDS São Paulo @ IBM

WiDS São Paulo brought together an estimated 100 attendees for a vibrant day of cutting-edge content and inspiration. Participants engaged in hands-on sessions on Generative AI and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), led by Laura Pellizari and Jorge D.B. Chagas. The event also featured insightful presentations by Fernanda Izepe, Flavia Beo, Mariana Zuliani Theodoro de Lima, and Pamela Santos. A standout panel with Elia Matsumoto, Mariana Afeche Cipolla, Leticia Penha, and Walkiria Resende Vieira explored the critical role of women in data science. Inspiring opening remarks from Fabiana Schurhaus and Thiago Viola set the tone for the day. The success of WiDS São Paulo was made possible thanks to the dedication of volunteers and behind-the-scenes contributors, all working to promote diversity and innovation in data science.

WiDS Al-Kharj @ PSAU

The event “Leveraging Data Science to Enhance Sustainability Indicators: A Success Story from Prince Sattam bin Abdulaziz University,” hosted by WiDS Al-Kharj @ PSAU, attracted an estimated 1,000 attendees. It showcased exemplary projects by undergraduate and graduate students, demonstrating how data science is being applied to achieve sustainability indicators in alignment with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Saudi Vision 2030. The event highlighted the powerful role of data science in driving sustainable initiatives and fostering innovation in line with global and national priorities.

WiDS Ann Arbor

WiDS Ann Arbor recently hosted a successful virtual event with a diverse audience from India, Singapore, Malaysia, and the USA. The session featured a fireside chat with three experts who explored the fundamentals of Knowledge Graphs (KGs) and their transformative impact across industries. Attendees showed strong interest in real-world applications, such as AI, recommendation systems, and personalized healthcare, as well as Neo4j’s Cypher query language.

The interactive Q&A session showcased participants’ enthusiasm to dive deeper into KGs, with overwhelmingly positive feedback and great interest in future discussions. Event Testimonial.

WiDS Bay Area Youth

Hosted by WiDS Bay Area Youth, a three-hour assembly focused on the fundamentals of data science and its real-world applications was held for middle school students at the Doris Eaton School in San Ramon, California. The interactive event engaged 103 sixth to eighth graders, along with additional teachers and staff, ensuring that complex topics were presented in an accessible and exciting manner.

The assembly began with a presentation outlining the basics of data science and machine learning, emphasizing their significance. Guest speaker Pritha Chaudhuri shared her insights on data science and her role as a data scientist at Intuitive Surgical. The event concluded with a workshop featuring the Datathon Nano: Healthcare Equity in Treatment of Breast Cancer, guided by WiDS in a Box materials for NextGen events, providing students with hands-on experience in applying data science concepts.

WiDS Eastern Province

WiDS Eastern Province recently hosted a virtual event titled “Exploring Artificial Intelligence: From Generative Models to Shaping the Future of Smart Cities,” attracting an impressive 1,000 attendees. The discussions focused on leveraging artificial intelligence to enhance language models and optimize input engineering while developing intelligent systems from raw data.

Emphasizing sustainable innovation in key sectors, the event bridged the gap between academic ambition and practical data science applications. Participants engaged in conversations about AI adoption in corporate development and learning processes, as well as its role in building smart cities. The importance of AI ethics was also highlighted as a fundamental aspect of this transformation, ensuring responsible and inclusive advancements.

WiDS Boulder

WiDS Boulder recently hosted an event that garnered around 50 RSVPs, with 15 attendees participating, primarily graduate students. While attendance was lower than expected, this provides an opportunity to engage with a dedicated group. To enhance future events, WiDS Boulder plans to reach out to more professionals, aiming for a balanced mix of students and industry experts, which will foster valuable networking and learning experiences for everyone involved.
