NextGen: Building Human-Centered AI Skills
WiDS NextGen introduces high school and early college learners to data science and AI through real-world challenges — including GenAI-assisted analysis of wildfire data — grounding technical learning in ethical awareness and critical reasoning.
So far:
- 350+ students have participated
- 94% say they would recommend the experience
- Students are building both confidence and capability for the future of work
But the global readiness gaps are widening:
- Thinking Gap: Heavy AI users are showing lower cognitive engagement
- Talent Gap: Only 60% of graduates can meet industry expectations for complex thought
- Hiring Gap: 75% of firms report new graduates underperform — and 60% leave within the first year (NACE, 2025)
WiDS is closing these gaps by equipping emerging talent with the mindset and skills to lead responsibly in the age of AI.
