WiDS Ambassador Event Highlights: July

WiDS Jos

WiDS Jos, held a WiDS NextGen program intended to reach young girls at Federal Government College Jos, Plateau State, in Nigeria to introduce them to data science and inspire them by featuring female role models in the field. Seeing the faces of 21 girls SS1 and SS2 girls light up with curiosity and excitement during our introductory video on data science and how women are making a difference in the field! They learned about data science, AI, and STEM careers. They engaged actively, asked numerous questions, and took detailed notes, leaving inspired and informed about the endless possibilities in data science.

WiDS Ecuador

The first Women in Data Science (WiDS) event in Portoviejo, Ecuador, was held virtually via Zoom and can be viewed here, provided by the Ecuadorian Society of Statistics, with over 50 participants. The event opened with a welcome address by Ambassador Lucía Rivadeneira, emphasizing the importance of visibility for women in data science. Four academic professors presented on topics including web design accessibility, sustainable uses of coconut waste, business intelligence for decision-making, and predictive models for urban management. The presentations were followed by a Q&A session, fostering collaboration and participation among attendees. The event successfully highlighted the knowledge and contributions of women in Portoviejo’s data science community.

WiDS Seattle @ Northeastern University

A Fireside Chat was hosted at Northeastern University, Seattle, to inspire aspiring tech professionals to pursue data science and provide current data scientists with insights from industry and academic experts. Distinguished women leaders, including Dr. Barbara Poblette, Rajeshwari Ganesan, and Betty Tso, participated. The discussion covered AI topics such as biases in data collection, career advancements in AI, and staying updated with the latest developments. Attendees engaged in interactive sessions on AI sustainability, accessibility, predatory algorithms, and multi-agent systems. The event was a resounding success, offering ample networking opportunities and fostering connections for potential hiring opportunities.

WiDS Philadelphia @ Vanguard

WiDS Philadelphia @ Vanguard recently hosted their first Upskill Workshop: Generative AI for Everyone. This session covered the fundamentals of generative AI, industry trends, use cases, and Vanguard’s research, providing practical guidance on using large language models (LLMs) in an accessible way. The event attracted 226 crew members, with participation spanning various divisions beyond IT, including HR, Finance, and International. Attendees were highly engaged, expressing interest in hands-on experience and requesting additional resources. Feedback highlighted the informative nature of the presentation and a keen interest in exploring generative AI tools for employees.

WiDS Upper Bavaria

WiDS Upper Bavaria organized The Python Programming Course which was a comprehensive two-month training program, led by Associate Prof. Somaia Zabihi and organized by FemsTech Worldwide and ambassador Dr. Mursal Dawodi. Designed for both beginners and those with prior programming experience, the course covered basic programming concepts and advanced topics like Object-Oriented Programming and functional programming. Participants engaged in theoretical lessons and practical exercises, learning Python syntax, data types, and control structures, as well as classes, inheritance, and lambda functions. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with attendees praising the hands-on approach and real-world examples. By the end of the course, participants had gained essential Python skills and confidence in applying them to real-world scenarios.

WiDS Geneva

WiDS Geneva partnered up with Dataiku and Expedia Group to host a “Data Afterwork” evening. In total, they welcomed around 60 people into the EG office space where they mingled and enjoyed some refreshments, generously provided by Dataiku. The format of the evening was 2 talks, each 30 minutes long, mixed with a lot of networking time, allowing the attendees to really mingle. The talks were around topics in Data Science; one from a technical perspective – quant modeling from Stanislava – and one from a business perspective – measuring ROAI (return on AI) from Stéphanie. Two lucky attendees won an hour of mentoring each with our esteemed speakers.

WiDS Boulder

WiDS Boulder hosted their first networking event held in-person, and received a five-star review from an attendee. There is excitement to host more events in the future and create a safe, welcoming space for women to connect over data science.
