June–October 2025 Ambassador Event Highlights

WiDS Ambassador-led events continue to showcase technical talks, workshops, panel discussions, and networking sessions in diverse areas of data science and AI — both in-person and online around the world. Each event reflects our mission to inspire, educate, and connect women and allies in data science.

🇯🇵 WiDS Tokyo @ IBM | June 13 | Regional Conference

The 6th annual WiDS Tokyo @ IBM brought together professionals and students for a hybrid event exploring the evolving landscape of data science. Hosted at IBM Japan Headquarters, the program featured experts from IBM, Panasonic Connect, Hamagin Research Institute, Otafuku Holdings, and Honda Motor, with sessions on topics from people analytics and AI-powered Q&A systems to trust in data storytelling.

With a satisfaction score of 3.9/4.0 and 97% of attendees expressing interest in future events, WiDS Tokyo 2025 was both informative and inspiring.

🇯🇵 WiDS Japan @ Dataiku | July 8 | Networking Event

The first-ever WiDS Japan @ Dataiku launched in Tokyo — a private, invite-only gathering to ignite Japan’s community of women leaders in data science and AI. Through keynotes, lightning talks, and intimate discussions, participants explored career journeys and the future of representation in Japan’s tech landscape.

Key takeaways centered on visibility, mentorship, and the creation of safe spaces for women to connect and grow. “It was incredibly inspiring to connect with so many accomplished female scientists,” shared one attendee.

🇰🇼 WiDS Kuwait @ Kuwait University | July 15 | Upskill Workshop

In partnership with Kuwait University, WiDS Kuwait hosted a session featuring Dr. Safia Mallallah, WiDS Kansas Ambassador, who presented her innovative educational platform CT Island — a Roblox-based experience teaching children coding and AI concepts through play.

The workshop engaged educators, researchers, and students eager to reimagine early tech education. “It’s the first time I’ve seen Roblox used for something so purposeful,” one participant shared.

🇺🇸 WiDS NYC @ Dataiku | July 15 | Regional Conference

Hosted by the Americas WiDS Ambassadors @ Dataiku, this event explored Responsible AI in Building Agents. Forty attendees across career stages joined discussions on ethical model development, observability, and human accountability in AI.

Highlights included key takeaways such as:

💡 “Bias isn’t theoretical; it’s historical.”
💡 “Responsible AI isn’t someone else’s job.”

🇬🇭 WiDS Accra | August 2 | Upskill Workshop

WiDS Accra hosted The Art of Exploring Data: EDA & Visualization in Python, a two-day beginner-friendly virtual workshop. Led by Bernice Awinpang Akudbilla, participants learned data cleaning, analysis, and visualization using Pandas, Matplotlib, and Seaborn.

Over 40 participants from five regions joined the interactive sessions. “The session simplified concepts I used to find intimidating,” shared one attendee.

🇮🇳 WiDS Nandyal @ RGM College | August 13 | NextGen Event

The WiDS RGMCET Chapter Inauguration celebrated the beginning of a new student-led initiative in Andhra Pradesh. With support from faculty leaders and administrators, students learned about WiDS’ mission and the opportunities in AI and data-driven innovation.

Nearly 150 attendees participated in this inspiring event, which sparked excitement and curiosity among students eager to begin their data science journeys.

🌍 WiDS Africa | September 20 | Regional Conference

Held for the first time in Uganda, the WiDS Africa 2025 Conference united ~150 participants under the theme Breaking into Data Careers. Featuring speakers such as Barbara Birungi Mutabazi (WITU) and Morine Amutorine (Sandbox Forum), the conference explored leadership, personal branding, and opportunities in data.

The event’s highlights included a hands-on Codelab, powerful keynote stories, and an innovation showcase featuring Africa’s Talking, GitHub, and Young Engineers Uganda.

🇩🇪 WiDS Freiburg @ SmallData | September 26 | Networking Event

Researchers at SmallData CRC Freiburg gathered for the first Female Scientist Retreat, a day focused on career growth, mentorship, and community-building. The retreat included discussions led by Susanne Marx and a panel with experts Maria Kalweit, Cristina Has, and Mouna Akacha, exploring career navigation and assertive communication for women in science.

“This retreat gave me both perspective and practical tools to navigate my career with confidence,” shared one participant.

🇹🇹 WiDS Trinidad & Tobago | October 18 | Upskill Workshop

WiDS Trinidad & Tobago hosted a virtual Spotlight Talk: “Seeing Data Differently – Making Insights Meaningful with Online Tools” featuring Toni-Marie Noel of CIBC Caribbean. Participants learned to build a local dataset of doubles vendors using the Google Maps API, enrich it in Google Sheets, and visualize it in Looker Studio — connecting data skills to local culture.

The workshop’s collaborative energy and creative exercises made complex tools feel approachable and fun.
